The Town Board of La Valle created a local Police Department to augment
the efforts of the County and DNR in order to provide
services to the community that are not otherwise available. 

Jurisdiction
 
  • The Town Of La Valle has an area of thirty-six square miles.  This includes 75 miles of roadways, two major lakes, (Lake Redstone and Dutch Hollow), two County Parks and four boat landings. 
  • Law Enforcement responsibility within the Township of La Valle resides with the Sauk County Sheriff’s Department, Town of La Valle Police Department, Sauk County Parks Department and the DNR.

In 2008 the Town Board hired retired Sauk County Chief Deputy Joe Prantner on a part-time basis as Office Administrator for the Police Dept. 
  • The Police Office Administrator performs all Administrative duties for the Police Department in lieu of a full time Chief of Police.  Joe is a Certified Law Enforcement Officer with over 34 years of law enforcement experience with 25 of those years in law enforcement management. Joe has held the positions of Sauk County Emergency Government Manager as well as Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain and Chief Deputy of the Sauk County Sheriff’s Department.
  • The Town Board directs the Police Office Administrator duties and responsibilities.  The primary duties & responsibilities of this position include management of the Police Office in addition to ensure that the Town of La Valle Police Department officers perform their duties within all state and federal laws, regulations and guidelines. 
  • Management of the Police Office includes but not limited to:  budget, scheduling, training, grant writing, equipment research & purchasing, inventory and maintenance of all equipment, drafting of policy and procedure, responding to citizen complaints against the Department and Officers as well as preparing and presenting statistical reports to the Town Board.
  • In addition to the Administrative duties, Joe patrols, responds to calls and works Boat Patrol.

ORGANIZATIONAL STAFFING

Officer Ryan Scully and Karl Larson are experienced full time Deputies with the Sauk County Sheriff’s Department and are employed on a part-time basis for the Town of  La Valle Police Department.  The Police Department consists of three areas of operations.

Patrol & Enforcement

The Patrol Officers are State Certified Law Enforcement Officers who serve on a part-time basis at the pleasure of the Town Board. 

  • Their primary duties are to enforce criminal and traffic laws and ordinance violations, patrol the town roads and respond to calls for service.  As a special service, the Officers conduct residential and business checks for crime prevention and detection. 
  • Secondary duties are to provide patrol and enforcement on the State and County roads in addition to Township parks and boat landings.  These Officers patrol and enforce boating regulations on Lake Redstone and Dutch Hollow. 
  • They also assist the Sheriff’s Department under mutual aid when requested to respond to calls outside the jurisdiction of the Town of La Valle. 
  • Officers Scully and Larson work a combined 20 hours per week.

  
 Training and Certifications

The Officers are certified in First Aid, CPR,AED, Electronic Control Weapons, Handgun, Rifle,Less Lethal Weapon, State Teletype System (TIME), Radar and PBT (Preliminary Breath Testing Device).
  • They attend a minimum of 24 hours of Law Enforcement Training as mandated by the Wisconsin Training & Standards Board in addition to weapons training & recertifications held on a monthly basis at the Sauk County Law Enforcement Training Facility.

  Boat Patrol
  • Officers Jim Astle and Ken Lane are two experienced veterans who patrol our Lakes from May through September. Their primary scheduled shifts include Friday through Sunday.  Jim also serves as a Patrol Officer for several shifts per month.
  • Additional hours are scheduled during the week as necessitated. 
  • Officer Ken Lane recently completed 22 years of service to the Town of La Valle as a part-time Boat Patrol Officer.
  • All salaries and equipment costs are reimbursed by the DNR on an annual basis at an average of 70%.
  • The Town of La Valle hires part-time civilian "officer assistants" who ride with Boat Patrol Officers to assist in launching and loading the boats, witness violations and asist with boating stops on the lakes.
