Boat Patrol Report 2011
Crime Prevention – Residential and Business Checks

The Town Board authorized a new public service program for the area residents.   Home and Business owners may fill out an application to have their vacant properties checked by the Town of La Valle Officers.  The program was designed to increase police visibility within the community in order to deter burglaries, thefts and vandalism.  In 2009, officers conducted a combined 852 checks of area households and businesses.

Citizens may obtain these applications at the Town Hall or on the Township website at
(www.townoflavalle.us).

Conversion to “ Less Lethal “ Weapon

The Town Board authorized the conversion of the Police Shotgun to a “ Less Lethal” weapon in order to provide the Police Officers with an alternative to deadly force in special circumstances.  The “ Less Lethal” shotgun utilizes a special bullet that is designed to incapacitate a subject. The weapon was converted, at no expense, through the efforts of Jim Astle.

Boat Landing Parking Enforcement

The Town Board authorized the Police Department to join forces with the Sauk County Parks Department to enforce the County Ordinance that requires parking permits at any of the four Boat Landings in the Town of La Valle.  Officers are deputized by the Sheriff, which allows them to issue tickets for failure to purchase the annual or daily parking passes.   In return for our assistance, the Town of La Valle receives $2,000.00 annually from the Parks Department in addition to a percentage of all revenues received through the sales of permits and enforcement tickets.

Replacement of Fisher Boat outboard motor.  The Mercury Motor on the Fisher Patrol Boat was in need of replacement.  The Town Board authorized the purchase of a more fuel efficient Evinrude Outboard Motor.  The replacement cost was $5,985.00 which is reimbursed over a five year depreciation schedule by the DNR.

New Police Facility

The Town Of La Valle Police Department moved into the new Town Hall and with authorization of the Town Board, established a shared police precinct office with the Sauk County Sheriff’s Department, the County Parks Ranger and our local DNR Warden.

This project provides increased law enforcement visibility in the Town of La Valle by Officers utilizing the facility for interviews, report writing and use of the restroom facilities.  This program also provides helpful and important communication exchange.

Computer system purchase and management

The Police Department managed the purchase and installation of the Town of La Valle computer system network by entering into a cooperative agreement with the Sauk County MIS Department.  We were able to purchase the computer system at reduced government bid prices and the County will provide the support services for 1/2 of the cost of private contracting.

Town of La Valle Cul-De-Sac and road (right-of-way) cleanup

Numerous residents throughout the Town of La Valle were parking vehicles, boats, trailers, as well as storing lumber, ornaments, landscaping materials and other items within the Town of La Valle road right-of-ways.  This interfered with our Public Works Department mowing, snow removal and road maintenance services.  The items were creating roadway hazards as well as affecting the scenic beauty that is well known around La Valle.  Through personal efforts of Al and Steve of our Public Works Department, and the Police Department, we were able to work with all the citizens to remove the items of concern without having to resort to law enforcement actions.
